Well, Brian and I finally made it back from San Francisco...not like we were supposed to, but we're back.
I had a great time at my work conference. I got to hang out with lots of old undergraduate (Truman State) friends from back in the day. We had tons of laughs and memories to share.
Brian came up on Friday and we got to spend the next few days together.
We had a lot of fun, mixed with some disappointments and discomforts, and man are we tired!
On Saturday morning, we hit the last few lectures of my work conference and then had lunch at an irish pub, went to church, did some shopping, and checked in to our hotel for the next couple of nights.
Our hotel was...well...not so wonderful. It wasn't in the best part of town (for example, homeless and drunk people sleeping right across the street on stoops, waking up to ambulance and fire truck sirens and a medical examiner van in the morning, and finding out on the last day that our door didn't properly latch so it could've been pushed open at any point without a key).
After we checked in, we headed out to see a San Francisco Giants baseball game. That would've been a lot more fun had it not felt like the dead of winter while we were there. Literally, the temp couldn't have been more than 45 degrees. The wind coming off of the bay was crazy, and we were only dressed in long sleeves and jeans. We eventually left our seats to go to standing room only so that we could huddle up and be amongst other warm-bodies!
The next day we headed out to explore. We got to take a cable car to Pier 39, which was pretty neat, especially when we crossed Lombard street and got to see the huge hills. We held on tight!
Once there, we rented a couple of bikes and went along a trail that crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, biking into Sausilito and Old Mill Valley (to see some awesome tall trees!)
After we finished up our ride, we waited literally 2 hours for the next ferry to head back to Fisherman's Wharf. We had a great time chatting and eating some ice cream.
From there, we headed to our dinner reservation, which was a Groupon I had purchased about 2 months ago to use specifically in San Francisco. It was for a nice dinner, one with appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and a bottle of wine. We were so excited to relax and eat some good food!
Well, as it turned out, the restaurant had apparently gone out of business since I had purchased the Groupon, and it was closed! Not exactly what we wanted to see as we walked to the front door. So we headed back to our hotel, picked another place to eat, and shared a milkshake at a diner down the street.
Since we didn't get a chance to spend much time at Fisherman's Wharf, we went back there Monday morning, after we got our bags all packed up and ready for our flight home. It was raining, but not too hard, and it didn't last too long into the morning. We did some tourist sight-seeing and shopped in the boutiques for some take-home presents for the kids. Colin was pretty excited to get his presents when we got home! We got him a San Francisco baseball, a balloon helicopter, a squishy man doll, and other various items.
We headed to the airport around noon, only to find out our flight had been delayed 1 hour due to fog. So, we missed our connecting flight in Denver (even though they told us in San Francisco that they would hold all connecting flights in Denver and we wouldn't miss it!). We waited about 4 hours for our flight to leave Denver and got into Kansas City at 1 am. It was a long trip back, especially when all I wanted to do was peak in on our sleeping kids.
The entire trip, I kept thinking about how much Colin would've loved San Francisco. He is at such a fun age right now, everything is all so new and exciting. But Brian and I had a great time spending time together and actually being able to finish conversations without interruptions.
Our next trip is to Vancouver to see my grandparents and aunt Dus and uncle Len. We leave Saturday and return Father's Day weekend.
