Updates on Colin's seizures...

Man oh Man have we had some medical stuff going on with Colin lately.

Long story short, on February 21st, Colin was at school and had a Generalized Tonic Clonic (GTC) seizure lasting almost 5 minutes.  He has had an Epilepsy diagnosis since he was 5 years old, but had only had Absence Seizures up til now.  He was taken off all epilepsy medications in December following a normal EEG that was routinely done to check his seizure disorder.  It was likely that he would grow out of his seizures, so we were very relieved to know his EEG was normal in December.

Well, fast forward to a few days before his GTC.  He had been sick (which we later found out was Flu A), hadn't really eaten much and was very worn out, tired, etc.  The school nurse was called when the students in his class alerted his teacher (who had her back turned to the class writing on the board) that something was wrong with Colin.  He hit his head pretty good on something, we're not sure what since it was only witnessed by his classmates.  Nurse Jenny knew of his epilepsy diagnosis, and also that he had never had a GTC before, so she decided to call the ambulance.  

This earned him a ride to Children's Mercy downtown.  Thank goodness I work there, but it was a LONG wait for him to arrive via ambulance.  Brian was able to get to the school just before the ambulance left, and Grammie was able to get there sooner and be there for Colin while he was scared.

We got checked out in the ED (watching closely for a concussion which he luckily didn't have!) and was able to get a Neurology follow up appointment a few days later.

We are back on a couple medications to help with his seizures (ones that will cover both Absence and GTC seizures).  It takes 12 weeks to completely dose up on his meds, so we're making sure he stays as healthy as possible and gets plenty of sleep in the meantime.

That night, of course, we had some tickets to a Sporting KC Soccer game that Colin was SOOOO excited to go to.

We made the decision that it was okay for him to go, despite his eventful day.

Father daughter dance

We've been super busy doing fun activities in February.

One of the highlights every year is the school's father-daughter dance.

I was out of town at a work conference that weekend, but somehow Brian pulled off coaching Colin's basketball teams tournament and the father-daughter dance in one day.  Way to go, Brian!!

Eli needed a haircut and I thought it would be fun to give him a ponytail.

There was a long wait at the restaurant, so the girls decided to just grab some Chipotle for dinner since they were short on time.  Easy peasy!

It was a Fiesta themed party - so much fun!

Brian said he could hardly get Maggie to hold still for a picture - she was out there dancing with her friends all night long!

It was a late night but well worth it!

Fun in Belton

As luck would have it, we ended up with a free Saturday morning one  weekend - and was able to drive down to Belton to watch cousin Gordy play in a basketball game.

I didn't get any pictures of Gordon playing, but he did a great job!  Nothing got by his defense!! :)

Afterwards, we all went to Tiff and Chads house with Meemaw and hung out for a little bit with all the cousins.  It was a really fun impromptu time together without any real schedules that needed to be kept.  Fun times by all!

More basketball, ordinary days, and SNOW....in February

Regular season basketball games came to an end.  Brian had another great season coaching Colin's 3rd grade basketball team.

We even got to see Daniel's basketball game one afternoon following our own basketball games...

I can't believe it, but we enrolled Eli in the Pre-Kindergarten class at Christ Lutheran Pre-K (the same place Colin and Maggie attended).  He was so excited to see one of his friends from daycare there.  He's getting so big!!

We got the kids a few treats for Valentines Day

Maggie performed in her 2nd grade musical.  It was a patriotic theme this year and she loved singing all of the songs!

We were unable to attend but Grammie sent us some cute pictures and videos.

We had a snow day line up to where the family could go see a movie, so we saw Lego Movie 2.  It was really cute, and Eli did a great job sitting and watching the whole time!

Brian took the kids sledding on a pretty big hill (not pictured well) at a nearby church.  They had a blast!  We've had so many snow days this year - the kids have used up all of their time off school already.  SO MUCH SNOW!!!!

We made homemade bath bombs from a kit (but they turned out like bath blobs), but it was still fun to make!

Maggie's last game - she played so hard all season and had a great time!

Eli's gotten really good at cutting up food and just loves to do it whenever anything needs cut up!

I come home from the store, and he comes running, asking "do you need me to cut anything, mom!?"

Maybe he'll become a sous chef one day...

And finally, Colin got invited to a birthday party with a real life video game trailer that came to their house.  It had 4 different games going all at once, with plenty of controllers for all kids to play.  So much fun!!!
